The Department of Animation and Digital Arts, Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia, is open to people with no animation background. It encourages students with diverse professional and educational experiences, coming from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. For example, this includes and is not limited to filmmakers, video artists, installation artists, print makers, painters, sculptors, architects, journalists, engineers, storytellers, biologists, physicians, ethnologists, educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, musicians, actors, dancers, computer scientists, programmers, technologists, designers, or writers. Students in this programme will focus on people, gestures, postures, style, and expressions and ways to animate a puppet, a digital character or even a robotic device. They will explore new forms of storytelling using real-time and interactive technologies. They are immersed in a unique creative environment that teaches the traditional forms of the art of animation and explores a sandbox of advanced techniques and digital technologies. From capturing the motion of a dancer to animating facial expressions following a human voice, students explore ways to re-create motion and to create relationships through storytelling.

The modules covered are: Traditional Forms of Animation; The History of Animation; Drawing in Motion; Storytelling Strategies; Digital Tools for Communication; Introduction to 3D Animation; Modelling and Design / Construction; Elements of Composition for Moving Images; Designing Interactive Content for Children; Games of Yesterday; Intro to Interactive Animation; Animation Studio: Character and Environment Design; Thesis Workshop: Animation and New Media; Aesthetic Apps, Designing Device Applications from Script to Mini-Screen; Compositing; Interactive Art; 2D /3D Character Production: Production; Elements of Composition In Moving Images; Thesis: Animation and New Media; Thesis Lab: Thesis Production and Management; Dynamic Environments for the Day after Tomorrow.

Applicants must have an accredited baccalaureate degree. They must also demonstrate their English Language Proficiency with scores in TOEFL or IELTS.
