The course is designed for science and engineering graduates who wish to develop expertise in modern high performance materials; the course develops an understanding of the properties for a wide range of engineering materials from polymer composites to light-metal alloys, the effect of processing and surface engineering on the properties of a material, and analytical techniques used for materials characterisation; it provides the knowledge and skills required for a career in materials research and product development of high performance materials.

Core modules: high performance ceramics and glasses; advanced materials; materials under stress; advanced materials characterisation; materials in service; plus options including: information technology for engineering; conservation and recycling of materials; surface engineering and characterisation; polymer engineering; fibre reinforced composites engineering; technology and knowledge management; stress analysis techniques; aerospace materials or automotive materials; electron-optical and x-ray techniques; advanced joining technology.
