This course has a strong practical bias; in part 1 students practise talking to groups of people, to discover what information systems they require; learners use the dynamic systems development method (DSDM) standard, which is quite different from structured systems analysis and design method (SSADM); students may already know how to produce data flow diagrams (DFDs) and data models from the SSADM standard; this course focuses on an object oriented approach using the unified modelling language (UML) standard to develop diagrams such as use case and class; in part 2 in group sessions learners run a series of facilitated workshops that are electronically recorded; students look back at the recording to see how various methods are working in practice and what improvements are made; there are some feelings of self-consciousness during the recording sessions, ground rules are established that help to focus on method; students must take part in this series of group meetings in order to attempt the assessed coursework.
