Students without the usual scientific or mathematical background for the course, can gain this during the foundation year, which has modules in chemistry, mathematics and physics; after successful completion of the foundation year students study how engineering and bioengineering combine in the application of engineering principles to human health; after an introduction to the relevant fundamentals, students specialise in either biomedical engineering, biomaterials science and tissue engineering, biological and systems bioprocessing, or medical devices and systems; in the final year students complete an individual project on a topic related to a chosen specialism.
