The 1st semester (4 months) is spent in the UK, after which students transfer to the University's Malaysia Campus; the School of Biosciences is recognised as a leading centre for research and teaching; the School is based on the Sutton Bonington Campus; the research infrastructure at the University's Malaysia Campus is excellent including a premier Biotechnology Research Centre: the AAR-UNMC Biotechnology Research Centre; the Biotechnology Research Centre is a product of industry-academic partnership between the Applied Agricultural Resources Sdn. Bhd (AAR), an internationally recognized premier centre in oil palm plantation and The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC); this partnership provides facilities for high level biotechnology research for students and also links students directly to the industry; housed within the Centre are the excellently equipped molecular laboratories for genomics, proteomics and transcriptomics work as well as state of the art micro propagation facilities and microscopy equipment; the Malaysia Campus, opened in 2005, is based at Semenyih, 30km from Kuala Lumpur; a central part of the course is a major research project throughout which students have the help and specialist advice of 2 academic supervisors (1 based in the UK and 1 based in Malaysia, to provide continuity of support); a wide range of topics is available within the 4 themes of the course: biotechnology; crop improvement; tropical crop production; ecology; students start work on their projects early in the 1st semester when they prepare a literature review and research plan (and, depending on the research project, some preliminary research work may also be carried out); the majority of the research work is carried out in Malaysia; throughout the project, particular emphasis is placed on the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of results; examples of potential research projects are: a comparative study of photosynthesis and water use efficiency in rice and maize; photosynthetic response to temperature in 2 contrasting landraces of bambara groundnut; genetic identity and other quality assessment of 4 popular bean varieties from East Africa and Central America.
