The course has been designed to give an in depth understanding of the animal industry. You will develop skills in 3 areas; practical animal management; science and business. Practical aspects include caring for exotic species, farm livestock management, aquatics and animal handling and restraint. You will spend time on our animal unit where you will gain essential practical skills and experience There is also a focus on science to include animal biology, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and animal health. Business aspects include managing and animal collection and business planning. Units studied are wide ranging and will include: - Understand and Promote Animal Health - Understand the Principles of Animal Biology - Understand Animal Anatomy and Physiology - Undertake Animal Handling and Safe Working - Plan and Monitor Animal Feeding - Manage Animal Accommodation - Undertake an Investigative Project in the Land-Based Sector - Undertake and Review Work Experience in the Land-Based Sector - Business Management in the Land-Based Sector - Understand the Principles and Undertake the Practice of Animal Nursing - Understand and Interpret Animal Behaviour and Communication - Understand Animal Welfare and Breed Development - Understand the Principles of Aquatics Husbandry and Management - Understand the Principles and Carry Out the Practice of Exotic Animal Health and Husbandry - Understand the Principles of Wildlife Populations, Ecology and Conservation - Understand and Undertake Wildlife Management and Rehabilitation - Understand and Carry Out Farm Livestock Husbandry * units may be subject to change. Opportunities will be available to visit other animal collections during the course. A work placement will be completed as part of the course. In addition to the main course students will also work towards functional skills.
