This course provides an integrated mix of the study of business, Chinese language and culture; it incorporates practical elements through providing students with the opportunity to live and study in China in addition to work experience within an international company; the course combines areas of expertise within the university's school of languages and international studies and the business school; the course uses work placements, industrial visits and guest lecturers; the course involves 2 overseas placements; the first, at the end of year 1, is a 4 week study tour to Beijing; the second, a full year abroad after students have successfully completed the 2nd year of study, consists of 2 parts: A study placement at a Chinese university, and a work placement where learners join an international company operating in China; the 1st year of study assumes no prior knowledge of Chinese (Mandarin); students who have already learnt some Chinese are assessed and placed at a higher level if appropriate; there is further study of Chinese language in year 2, together with the study of business and Chinese society throughout year 1 and year 2 providing students with the skills required to spend year 3 of the programme in China; the final year of the programme enables students to develop a range of language skills required in business setting, and to develop their understanding of strategic decision-making, management issues and the role that these play in the survival and competitiveness of the global firm.

Year 1: Beginners Chinese language: literacy; beginner�s Chinese language: conversation; an introduction to Chinese culture; the fundamentals of business; management and organisational functions; an optional module, from accounting or introduction to marketing. Year 2: Intermediate Chinese: literacy; intermediate Chinese: language; a preparation for year abroad module; the globalisation of business; management of operations; an optional module, from human resource management, marketing, or business environment and business culture of China. Year 3: the 3rd year of the programme is a placement in China; the 1st half of the year is spent studying at a partner institution in Beijing, Shanghai, or another major city in China, while the 2nd half is spent on a work placement. Year 4: Advanced Chinese; techniques and practice of interpreting; dealing with Chinese documents; international strategic management; dissertation; an optional module, from human resource management, marketing, development and change in the Asia Pacific region, cultural and business, and UK-China business creation.
