Computational engineering allows analysis of problems that would otherwise be almost impossible by traditional experimentation due to cost or safety; virtual prototyping can provide modelling, analysis, simulation, optimization, and thus a safer and more cost effective alternative to investigate new engineering solutions; this course offers a solid grounding in modern computational engineering, with a strong fluid mechanics emphasis; students will gain multidisciplinary in-depth training in the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and related numerical and computational techniques which prepare them either for a career in industry or research in an area where these tools play a significant role; students experience the type of problems encountered by academic and industrial researchers, both via taught courses and project work on an individual and group basis.

Core modules: advanced engineering research preparation; variational methods; computer modelling techniques; advanced engineering research project; organisation and design; computational linear algebra; advanced numerical methods in engineering; optional modules include: computational fluid dynamics; introduction to turbulence and turbulent flows programming; finite element analysis in structural mechanics; material models and modes of failure; RF microelectronics; stress analysis techniques; plates and shells; multiphase systems; research and practice in industrial CFD; research techniques in advanced electromagnetics.
