The first year is the underpinning year, at the end of which students are required to undertake a period of work experience of direct relevance to their planned future career path; it include a variety of modules introducing the principles of ecology, landscape development, cultural history, as well as an introduction to business management; students also undertake training in a range of practical archaeological, conservation and field skills, including opportunities to complete certificated courses in machinery and equipment operations relevant to conservation activities; from the practical perspective, the 2nd year includes the completion of habitat surveys, research projects and presentations and the production of information resources; students are required to mentor first year students on the practical conservation activities as part of their training in volunteer management.
