This joint degree offers in-depth study of crime, punishment and victimisation as well as the causes and manifestations of long and short term insecurity in a global context; it aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the core schools of criminological thought, their history, contemporary relevance and application as well as their relationship to issues of security; the curriculum offers a varied, yet focused, choice of subjects through which students are able to develop their interests within the specialised fields of criminology and security studies; the security studies aspect of the degree aims to examine key elements of insecurity in the contemporary world, be it from visible, radical, religious groups and terrorist campaigns through to longer term issues of insecurity created by declining resources or a changing environment; the focus is not solely on Britain and the security threats it faces but includes wider study of the underlying causes of insecurity and various governmental and group responses to it.
