Criminology is essentially concerned with exploring the nature of social order, laws and punishment; it looks at the construction of laws, the motivations and reasons behind law-breaking and with society's responses to such behaviour; combining the study of criminology with sociology allows the student to explore wider, related questions in this area, giving student greater insight and understanding into many of the issues that we face today; by its very nature, criminology is a cross-disciplinary subject, and in addition to the core criminology staff, lecturers with expertise in sociology, forensic science, politics, law and social policy all contribute to this programme; using real-life case studies, theoretical perspectives and the framework of the law, students tackle the phenomenon of crime from an exciting contemporary standpoint; this degree includes a significant practical element, which means student also have the opportunity to work with ex-offenders and police, prison and probation officers, and look at the daily work of the criminal justice system; students gain vital critical and analytical skills as well as a thorough knowledge of the key issues of the criminal justice system, both very attractive areas of expertise for a range of employers; sociology encourages the student to look beneath the surface of social structures and institutions, and examine the powers and desires that motivate and control; by studying criminology with sociology, student can gain further insights into issues such as deviance, race, class and gender, and the way that these issues are particularly relevant in thinking about crime.
