The foundation degree in education studies is aimed at anyone working in school who is not a qualified teacher, for example, teaching assistants, mentors, coaches, learning support assistants and counsellors; the programme introduces students to the theoretical underpinnings of teaching and learning and students are encouraged to link this deeper understanding to their professional practice; each semester include a work-based assignment to facilitate this integration; students understand how social and historical factors have combined to create current educational structures; reflect on own professional context and professional goals; understand the process of child development; engage with current theory on curriculum design; develop knowledge of theories of social justice in relation to the education system; learners also can understand how assessment is used as a means for students to learn.
