English: Year 1: Introduces the study of literature and language and raises fundamental questions about the nature of literature, reading and interpretation; broad study of historical and theoretical perspectives.

Years 2-3: Students study particular areas of literature, language and cultural theory in detail; optional courses include: literature from the Middle Ages to the present day; language and cultural theory; creative writing; film: post-colonial studies; Jewish studies; aspects of the relationship between literature and its broader historical, political, and cultural contexts.

Music: Year 1: Integrated programme combining technical studies (analytical listening, performance, and composition) with historical and critical work; computers in word and music processing.

Years 2 and 3: Selection from a wide range of options; music computing, ranging from the use of synthesizers and notation software to advanced studies in studio techniques and MIDI programming, can be combined with composition; composition, leading to the submission of a collection of original compositions, may take practically any form: scores, electronic realisations prepared in the Department's studio even computer software; student may choose courses in history and criticism; these involve seminar work, and include sociological topics (for instance music in popular culture and gender in music) as well as repertory studies ranging from Medieval period to the present day; in performance, ensemble playing may be chosen as well as, or instead of, solo performance; advanced keyboard students can study various aspects of historical performance practice.
