English covers both language and literature; in literature the course introduces theoretical and critical approaches through different periods, genres, topics and critical issues; texts from the Renaissance to the 21st century including contemporary and popular writing such as crime fiction, science fiction and 20th Century Gothic or to explore the wider reaches of literature; in language students cover its structure, sound system and variation and discuss social issues such as the implications of accent and dialect; Creative writing covers 3 genre strands: fiction, poetry and scriptwriting; students learn to read as a writer, to study the craft of published writers and, alongside these disciplines, to develop their own creative writing skills and personal philosophy of composition; students also gain insights into the processes of publishing, broadcasting and performing.
