Institute of Biological and Environmental Science is organised around 3 themes each with its own leader: 1st theme: Biological interactions in soil: rhizosphere ecology, biology of mycorrhizas, biology of root pathogens and parasites; microbial species diversity and community structure; soil invertebrate ecology; microbial pathogens (including human pathogens) in soil; plant/soil interactions, decomposition and nutrient cycling, genetic and environmental control of root growth, uptake of elements by plants, drought resistance; biogeochemistry of metals, environmental fate and remediation of pollutants, ecotoxicology; biosensors and soil health; modelling soil processes, particularly in relation to environmental change; 2nd theme: Ecology: investigation of how physical and biotic environments affect organisms' individual performance, life-histories, genetic diversity and how these, in turn affect their population dynamics; investigation of processes that control the diversity and relative species abundance of plant and animal communities, including trophic interactions (herbivory, predation, parasitism); investigations of how community composition determines the ecosystem service provided by such communities; 3rd theme: Integrative physiology: circadian and photoperiodic timing in mammals; the causes and consequences of variation in animal energy expenditure; fish immunology; crab physiology; vector and parasite physiology.
