Students cover the basic sciences in biology and chemistry, and foundation courses including ecology and environmental science, geology, plant ecology and taxonomy and sustainable land management and 2 field courses on plant ecology and the forest environment; some choice of courses is available in first year depending on entrance qualifications.

Level 1: Covers basic sciences in biology and chemistry, and foundation courses including ecology and environmental science, geology, plant ecology and taxonomy and sustainable land management; some choice of options may be available. Level 2: Courses provide an essential grounding in many fundamental concepts of forest science; subjects include: soil science, community ecology, plant diversity and plants, man and the environment; options; all students participate in a field course to study forest ecology and management. Level 3: Combines pure and applied sciences where the subjects of forest ecology and stand dynamics are developed; areas covered include: silviculture, applied forest ecology, forest measurement, plant biogeography and conservation, and experimental design and analysis; options. Level 4: Choice of 4 specialist subjects from a wide range of options including: forest protection, tropical forest ecology and management, special topics in forestry, plant/animal interactions and nature conservation in Britain; plus an individual research project: students either choose their project from a selection provided or develop a project on an interest of their own through discussions with staff; students also have the option of preparing a forest management plan, with 3 weeks spent studying a 500 hectare forest where the soils, vegetation and the forest stands; observations and measurements made are used to prepare a 5-year plan that ensures the sustainable management of the forest; a trip to study forestry in southern Germany completes the programme.
