1 set of modules is for beginners or near beginners and these provide intensive tuition in written and spoken language, including classes with native speakers, and an introduction to modern French culture, literature and society; another set is for students with SQA higher grade or GCE A level or equivalent; these include written and spoken language and the study of 20th century culture, literature, film and society; students choose 1 or more courses, including performance studies, composition and music history; students may write a dissertation, submit a portfolio of compositions or give a recital; alternatively, students may choose courses from a range of options; these vary from year to year, but include, for example, topics from renaissance music, late twentieth-century music, and Scottish music.
