German provides an intensive introduction to the German language for students with no previous knowledge of German, or with qualifications beneath higher or A level standard; beyond the second year, students have considerable flexibility in putting a programme together from a variety of modules; courses currently on offer include: Berlin, city of the twentieth century; images of childhood in German literature; the 20th century German novel; national socialism; opposing movements: classicism and romanticism; film and text; students choose 1 or more courses, including performance studies, composition and music history; students may write a dissertation, submit a portfolio of compositions or give a recital; alternatively, students may choose courses from a range of options; these vary from year to year, but include, for example, topics from renaissance music, late twentieth-century music, and Scottish music.
