History addresses historical and contemporary issues and themes while ensuring considerable freedom of choice; students develop a whole range of historical and career-orientated skills, while learning about the past's historical relationship with the very complex world of the present day; students can specialise in British political, social or economic history, European or American history; the modules emphasise the importance of historical understanding and interpretation of source materials; English covers both language and literature; in literature the course introduces theoretical and critical approaches through different periods, genres, topics and critical issues; texts from the Renaissance to the 21st century including contemporary and popular writing such as crime fiction, science fiction and 20th Century Gothic or to explore the wider reaches of literature; in language students cover its structure, sound system and variation and discuss social issues such as the implications of accent and dialect.
