Course is designed to allow students to further their undergraduate interest in history, and to develop the skills and knowledge which they would need if they decided to undertake further research into the past; it combines training in research techniques and theoretical and historiographic analysis, with taught courses and a substantial dissertation; choice of specialist modules covering a range of periods, matching the research interests of the teaching staff including: Women, gender and power in the Middle Ages; Normandy in the High Middle Ages, national identities in Britain and Ireland, 1660-1800; identities and the Victorian city; consumerism and the Cold War; sport and politics in the twentieth century; the dissertation (taken by those who proceed beyond the diploma) allows students to research a substantial topic of their own choosing, under supportive individual supervision.
