Year 1 of History of Art provides a grounding in key skills needed to study both History of Art and History through the study of medieval, early modern, modern and contemporary Art History; topics studied in subsequent years may include modern art in Italy, arts of war and peace, modern art in Britain, French fashion 1700-1900, Eduard Manet, modern German art, Paris 1789-1900, Simone Martini, Medieval Tuscany, Italian Renaissance drawing, visual cultures of Italian cinema, and image and word in 18th-century British art; Italian beginners spend most of year 1 learning the language; in addition they take units on contemporary Italy and on modern literature; students who already have an advanced knowledge of Italian choose from a wider range of culture units on topics such as Italian cinema, Medieval and Renaissance Italy, or Italian colonial culture; language is taught mainly by native speakers who use a range of approaches and excellent multimedia facilities to develop fluency and accuracy; for the rest of the degree students choose from the same list of culture options whatever programme they are studying.
