The basic material of history of art is the art of all periods; these include buildings, sculptures, drawings, paintings, prints, and the products of the decorative and industrial arts; the course focuses on the western European tradition, with options in Latin-American art; field trips take place at each level to visit major galleries and architecture.

Level 1: Introduction to art history: classicism to revolution; the modern tradition; together these 2 courses provide a broad introduction to the history of painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as decorative arts, from the classical and medieval periods onwards. Level 2: Virgin to Venus: deals with themes in European art from the 12th century to the Renaissance; Caravaggio to Goya: covers European art and architecture from about 1600 to the early 19th-century. Levels 3 and 4: Provides a great deal of scope for students to develop their special interests; the degree deals with aspects of European, British and American art from the middle ages to the present day; students select options from a list of specialised courses including for example: high Renaissance and Mannerism; Pictish; Romanesque; 17th-century Dutch; Scottish painting; American Modernism; the British country house; students are also examined on museums, exhibitions and art criticism.
