The human biology programme has been designed to give students an interdisciplinary perspective on human beings and their interaction with the environment; students have the opportunity to consider the human body from a cellular to an ecosystem level; human biology can be studied alongside other related and popular subjects such as geography, sport studies and psychology; these programmes include practical activities, ranging from regular laboratory work to residential fieldwork and one day field trips, classroom lectures and debates over key issues; the range of current case studies include the ethics of human cloning and the impact of the human genome project through to the effects of climate change on ecosystems, and the issues raised by population changes and obesity; students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and views; teaching methods are designed to ensure that all students, regardless of their science background, are equipped with the knowledge they need; tutorials, practicals, team-building exercises and peer-group activities figure throughout the programme and place the student experience at the centre; sport and exercise science students are introduced to the main disciplines of sport physiology, sport psychology, health sciences, exercise science, nutrition, fitness and coaching science; students on the combined pathway have a choice of which disciplines they study; single honours students are expected to study across the range of sport and exercise science disciplines; specialisation is the key element within this programme; this might include an in-depth study of elite sport performers, applied sport psychology, exercise physiology, health and fitness or nutrition; all single honours students also write a dissertation on an area of interest; within this study students have the opportunity to collect data in the laboratory or other sporting environments to really apply the knowledge gained from earlier study within the programme.
