The 1st year consists of training and lab rotations in mini projects, leading to an MRes degree, followed by a 3-year PhD in 1 of the participating laboratories; the 1st year contains 3 sub-themes, 1 per term, each consisting of a 10-week laboratory mini-project and parallel core-topic discussion sessions; sub-themes cover: immunity; infection; cell and molecular biology; research covers topics relating primarily to the complex problems associated with host defence against microbial challenge; NB the MRes cannot be taken separately from the PhD (it is an integral part of the 4-year programme); in addition to the course fee (University Composition fee) students may have to pay a college fee.
