A degree in international relations brings together a complex matrix of interests and agendas that have a bearing on both national governments and civil society; processes of globalisation are increasingly impacting on communities and habitats around the world; armed conflicts continue to take place, both between, and increasingly within, states; the course provides the opportunity either to specialise in European cultural studies, European cinema or European politics, or to mix modules from across the 3 strands; as well as a flexible career path which uses the problem-solving and decision-making skills developed in the course.

In the 1st year of a Joint Honours degree students may choose to split their time evenly between 2 subjects, or opt to include a 3rd subject; this 3rd subject can be drawn from the wide range of subjects available within the School, or a language through the University Language Programme; at the end of the 1st year students have the opportunity to choose between an equally weighted Joint Honours degree and 1 where they specialise in 1 subject in preference to the other; they can also continue to pursue a 3rd subject.
