The course encourages students to think about careers open to linguistics graduates, with vocational relevance built into the curriculum; 2 possible career pathways through the course are: clinical, which prepares students for postgraduate study in speech and language therapy or special needs teaching; or discourse, which helps students prepare for work in copywriting, journalism or linguistics; the degree offers students the opportunity to study aspects of contemporary media: from film, television, newspapers, magazines and advertising to new media forms including DVD, CD-ROM, the Internet, mobile phones, interactivity, MP3, vinyl and CD music formats, blogging and podcasting in social, cultural, technological and political contexts.

In the 1st year of a Joint Honours degree students may choose to split their time evenly between 2 subjects, or opt to include a 3rd subject; this 3rd subject can be drawn from the wide range of subjects available within the School, or a language through the University Language Programme; at the end of the 1st year students have the opportunity to choose between an equally weighted Joint Honours degree and 1 where they specialise in 1 subject in preference to the other; they can also continue to pursue a 3rd subject.
