Year 1: Students study design, materials and an introduction to manufacturing processes combined with information technology, an introduction to business operations such as marketing, quality and inventory management and mathematics and electrical systems; students are also taken into industry to understand manufacturing organisations. Year 2: Modules in manufacturing processes, design for manufacture and automated manufacture are taught alongside inventory management, business accounting and ergonomics and human factors in design; there are also some options; an industrially focused, year-long, group project enables students to apply their knowledge and understanding; at the end of the year students make the choice of the MEng or BEng degree. Year 3: Students undertake a more in-depth industrially related programme and company visits prepare them for the final year industrial placement; a wide range of optional modules are available. Year 4: During the autumn semester students work in an industrial company; this can be in the UK or overseas and many students are employed by the placement company; the final semester includes modules at masters level including rapid product development, marketing management, lean manufacturing and technology management.
