The research portfolio draws inspiration from and contributes to aspects of biology, chemistry and industry; the general aim of the activities is to reveal the links between molecular structure and potentially exploitable material properties; there is fundamental and applied research on exotic and disordered materials including structured liquids, supercritical fluids, supercooled/glassy systems, liquid crystals, ultra-thin molecular films and matter under extreme conditions; the group also has several programmes on novel optical bio-imaging and optical manipulation which include spectroscopic imaging, time resolved flouresence imaging and optical tweezers.
