This course has been designed to prepare the learner for work in the area of Music Production, including skills related to the recording studio and electronic composition; the course offers practical skills and theoretical knowledge of sound recording, computer music, live sound and other areas of the music industry; learners use both Macintosh and PC based systems in conjunction with packages such as Reason, Pro Tools, Logic and Cubase SX.

The 1st year covers practical areas such as the use of digital recording equipment, mixing consoles, FX units and sequencing systems; practical work is enforced by theoretical study related to the technological understanding of equipment and for example, composing music for film and television; as learners gain understanding and control of the studio equipment, they are encouraged to develop creative skills in production and composition; this is accompanied by several in-depth projects into areas such as studio production, for example creating a radio show, and organising a live music showcase as part of the Faculty of Arts end of year shows; the 2nd year of the course includes a major project where learners compose and produce an album; the practical element of this project is accompanied by modules focussing on legal and business elements related to the music industry in addition to designing recording spaces in relation to the physics of sound and the optimum sound quality required; other specialist modules include acoustics, applied production techniques and units specialising in mastering and post production.
