Year 1 Philosophy students get a grounding in the fundamentals through 2 mandatory introduction to philosophy units; also mandatory in year 1 are units in logic and metaphysics; students also choose units such as philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, and Aristotle's Ethics, or they may decide to take open units outside philosophy in their 1st year; year 2 completes foundations in analytic philosophy, and students progress to advanced units in year 3; German offers wide coverage of German Studies through the study of language, Germanic histories and cultures; language units are tailored to suit the level of the student; all German courses include a period of residence abroad during year 3, either as a teaching assistant or on an Erasmus exchange with a partner university in Germany or Austria.
