This programme aims to help produce a new generation of political scientists who upon graduation will immediately be qualified to accept leading positions in their professions; graduates are carefully trained and widely read, indeed they should be able to interpret, evaluate, and use research results across a broad spectrum of topics, well beyond the field of their specific doctoral research.

The programme is divided into 2 parts: part 1: taught courses examined by unseen written examination, leading to MRes in Political Science (2 years of coursework for track 1; 1 year for track 2); students choose a major and minor specialisation from Government Department's MSc programmes: comparative politics, European politics and governance, public policy, and political theory; part 2: research and writing of doctoral thesis; track 1 students fulfill entry requirements for a Master's degree and follow a 2+2 structure; track 2 involves exemption from 1st year of taught courses and is only recommended by course conveners if the student already has appropriate prior training in quantitative methods and has already completed an MA or MSc in Political Science.
