The programme has 3 compulsory courses and 3 optional courses; a research project takes place over a maximum of 12 months from receipt of a favourable ethics application.

Introduction to primary care; population to individuals: statistics, epidemiology and critical appraisal for primary care; research methods; and a research project in the following areas: empirical data collection, involving either quantitative of qualitative methods; secondary analyses of routine data or datasets collected as part of a larger project; literature review using Cochrane-type systematic review approaches; thematic analyses; integrative approaches (please note, this is more extensive and rigorous than the literature review that forms part of any project submission); case study; and audit; optional courses: achieving clinical effectiveness; learning in practice; management of long-term conditions; and social justice.
