The course explores the inextricable links between theory and practice and students are encouraged to develop a principled approach to their teaching based on their own informed theory of teaching and learning English; this development is firmly based on experiences and observations within the classroom setting; students are also encouraged to be supportive, to adopt collaborative ways of working and to enjoy themselves; the English courses promote a wide variety of teaching methods through which children can be encouraged to enjoy and extend their experience of texts of all kinds and come to use the resources of language more fully and flexibly; colleagues from schools help in the planning and delivery of the University curriculum and in interviewing students for the course; school-based experience is integral and is as flexible as possible in encouraging interests, facilitating experience in a variety of schools and enabling work in collaborative and team-teaching situations; all English students follow a core course; taught sessions relate to the requirements of the National Curriculum and particular areas of focus are: ways of promoting knowledge of, and interest in, language; ways of developing children's abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking; methods of presenting poetry, the novel and short story; media studies; drama in the English curriculum; teaching Shakespeare; citizenship and English; inclusion, differentiation, special needs and English as an additional language; assessment of the English curriculum; information and communication technology in relation to English teaching; the course is offered on a modular basis.
