This flexible programme addresses both recent key concerns and sustained intellectual traditions within sociology; this interdisciplinary programme is taught by academics from several departments, all of whom are actively engaged in research which integrates sociology with work in science studies, philosophy, anthropology, political economy, feminist theory, cultural analysis, history and geography; the degree has a central theory component, some methods training, and options which allow students to apply these analytical tools to particular issues and empirical topics; the programme offers 5 pathways: contemporary sociology: this option introduces a broad range of recent developments within the discipline of sociology and within the contemporary world at large; cultural sociology: explores the �cultural turn� in contemporary sociology by focusing on key areas such as consumer culture, material culture, media and visual analysis and multiculturalism; economy and society: addresses the social organisation of economies and their associated distributions of power; mobilities: this option introduces an approach within the social sciences that focuses on studying the intersecting mobilities of people, objects, technologies and ideas; social and cultural theory: introduces a range of major theoretical traditions within sociology as well as the changing contours of the frontiers of the discipline; each pathway requires a designated core course plus 4 optional modules and the submission of a dissertation.

Core modules include: contemporary debates in sociology; critical debates in cultural studies; mobilities, society and change; mobilities (theories and methods); theories of economy and society; social and cultural theory; 4 optional modules from: animals, science and society; anthropology of cybercultures; cinema and social theory; consumer society; contested natures; critical debates in cultural studies; deliberation, consultation, participation; developments and challenges of the information age; elementary data analysis; environment and culture (issues, politics and institutions); environmental risk; feminist cultural theory; gender and globalisation; gender, sex and bodies; genomics and society; global health (debates in medical anthropology); globalisation, the state and democracy in the third world; key thinkers (Michel Foucault); mediated nature (communication media and the environment); medical knowledge, technologies and practices; multicultural societies; qualitative methods in the social sciences; science, technology and society; security and modernity; social theory and the environment; the European Union; the 'state' of contemporary capitalism.
