The programme aims to develop the next generation of professionals to drive progress towards sustainable delivery of goods and services; Research Engineers on the programme develop technical skills, with the breadth and flexibility to balance social and economic benefits against resource use and environmental impacts, becoming effective agents of change in the transition to a sustainable economy; the Research Engineer spends the majority of their time based within an industrial sponsor organisation undertaking a portfolio of research projects to address the company's sustainability challenges; the Research Engineer returns to the University to undertake a professional and technical development programme and for annual EngD conferences, examinations, events and so on; each project is supported throughout by a team of industrial and academic experts, along with staff at the Industrial Doctorate Centre.
