The course enables student to develop their understanding of theoretical issues in language teaching and the implications of these for classroom practice; provide students with the necessary qualification to enable them to move into new areas within TESOL such as: Teacher education; English for special purposes; materials development ;and the teaching of English to young learners; main focus is on the application of theoretical principles to the different teaching situations from which the participants come.

Compulsory modules: Preparing for TESOL Enquiry (15 credits); Dissertation (30 or 60 credits); Option modules: 120-150 credits from: English Language Teaching for Special Purposes (15); Fundamental Aspects of Language Theory (30); Language Teaching Methodology (30); Further Issues in the Methodology of Language Teaching (30); Language Testing (15); 2nd and Foreign Language Learning (30); Language Course and Syllabus Design (15); Designing and Evaluating TESOL Programmes and Materials (15); The Teacher as Reflective Practitioner (15); Language Teacher Education (15); Teaching Children English as a Foreign or Additional Language (30); Web-assisted Language Learning (15).
