This course provides both academic study and professional training in town planning, and covers the spatial planning curricula for initial qualification with the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI); the 1st year of the degree is in common with all other undergraduate programmes in Planning and Landscape and students may choose to switch to any of these programmes at the end of the 1st year if they wish; the 1st year gives a broad introduction to the environment from the point of view of planning and management; in the 2nd year students begin to specialise more in town planning itself; they take courses on plan-making and procedures, and apply their knowledge in case studies and practicals; they also get the chance to select a free choice option from across the entire university, for instance they may wish to study a language in order subsequently to take up the opportunity to study for part of their degree at one of the partner institutions overseas; there is also a field course to a rural area within the UK; the 3rd year is where students begin to develop more specialist knowledge; all course units are compulsory but students can build upon their chosen specialism by choosing an appropriate topic for their 12,000 word dissertation; the 4th year is largely concerned with the further development of the student's specialism and professional-related studies in town and country planning.
