The goal of this accelerated Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program is to attract and retain top quality graduate students within the graduate research programs. Individuals interested in applying for the accelerated Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program must demonstrate exceptional academic skills as well as providing a documented interest in pursuing a career in research science (e.g. an undergraduate research project). This accelerated Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program allows entry of exceptional students with the required academic and research background to the program directly from an undergraduate program without the need to have completed a Masters degree. This program in exercise physiology is designed for students interested in skeletal muscle physiology; cellular responses to altered mechanical loading in bone and muscle; the impact of endurance exercise and other stressors on the immune system; mechanistic links between obesity, accelerated biological aging and immunological dysfunction (senescence); and research careers in academia.

The modules are 30 hours of core classes: PEP 6301 Physiology of Exercise, PEP 6305 Measurement in Health and Physical Education, PEP 6340 Principles of Motor Learning, HPER 8306 Advanced Seminar, PEP 7304 Advanced Measurement Topics in Exercise Science, HPER 7323 Program Planning and Proposal Writing in the Health Professions. Students enrolled in the accelerated Ph.D. (Kinesiology) are required to take a minimum of 6 hrs of the following statistical analysis classes: EPSY 8322 Inferential Statistics in Educational Research, EPSY 8321 Linear Models in Educational Research, SOCW 8320 Multivariate Statistics I, SOCW 8321 Multivariate Statistics II. Physiology/Exercise Science Area: PEP 6330 Exercise Biochemistry, PEP 7301 Advanced Exercise Physiology, PEP 7398 Advanced Special Problems in Human Performance: Laboratory Techniques, PEP 7398 Advanced Special Problems in Human Performance: Advanced Laboratory Research, PEP 8302 Advanced Skeletal Muscle Physiology. The Designated Electives are Biology (endocrinology and physiology), Biochemical and Biophysical Science (biochemistry), Educational Psychology (learning, research, and statistics), Health, Human Development and Consumer Sciences (nutrition), Optometry, Pharmacy (pharmacology and Patho-physiology), Psychology (behavioral medicine, cognitive psychology, and statistics), Decision and Information Sciences (statistics). Additionally, students can complete work in the Texas Medical Center under the University’s Inter-institutional agreement. These areas include cardiovascular physiology, Orthopedic and rehabilitative medicine, pulmonary physiology.

Students must normally have completed a masters degree with minimum of 3.3 GPA and must have taken three courses in their previous academic preparation that are judged to be equivalent to the following courses - PEP 6301 physiology of exercise, PEP 6305 measurement in health and physical education, PEP 6340 principles of motor learning. Students should have secured a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based) or 213 on the computer-based exam on the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or overall band score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
