The major in Ancient History complements and builds upon the general offerings in language and archaeology while allowing the student to focus on the process of continuity and change. Our courses address many topics normally associated with the study of modern histories. These include: Famine, the realities of a subsistance economy and politics of food supply; Feminism, the closeting of women (Athens) and the gendered definition of a warrior society enshrining virtus or manhood (Rome); Community, the coalescence of personal prestige and social status within the political identity of citizenship (Rome); Slavery, the paradox of the first democracy as one of the five historical slave societies (Athens); and Colonialism and cultural hegemony, or the Romanization of conquered peoples.

Students must have completed their secondary school education and have subsequently enrolled at a college or university and earned credit, in order to be considered for transfer admission. Students are admitted to the freshman class on the basis of strong academic performance in a rigorous course of college preparatory study, especially in the areas of math and science; The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of transfer applicants whose native language is not English and who have not been studying in an English-speaking country for two years or more. The vast majority of students accepted score better than a 600 on the paper-based test or better than 250 on the computer-based test. Students should have SAT or ACT Test for the admission.
