The Bachelor of Arts in Botany is a liberal arts degree with an emphasis on understanding modern concepts in plant sciences, particularly related to the role of botany in society and the uniqueness of the ecology of Hawai'i. The BA degree provides students flexibility to pursue a broad liberal arts education, and still gain a sound foundation in botany with an area of particular interest. Courses are available in conservation, ecology, ethnobotany, molecular evolution, physiology, structural botany, systematics, and selected faculty research specialties. The courses applied toward the botany major may be selected with the student's interest area in mind.

Applicants to UH Manoa are expected to have completed certain requirements in high school. Professional and certain other programs may have specific GPA and prerequisite course work requirements. Students who do not have any university/college coursework will be required to submit either the SAT or ACT. Both are not required. Minimum TOEFL Scores required are: Computer Score 173, Internet Score 61, Paper Score 500. 2.50 is the minimum GPA requirement for international applicants transferring from an U.S. institution. Professional and certain other programs may require higher GPAs and additional prerequisite course work.

Hawaii provides an outstanding location for many types of botanical studies. The rich endemic flora and the insular isolation, for example, provides unique opportunities for studies of evolution, conservation biology, and alien plant invasions. Similarly, the host culture and access to the other Pacific island nations allows studies of plants in a human context, such as assessments biodiversity and its maintenance. Research studies are not limited to the Hawaiian Islands. Faculty and students have research projects in many areas of the tropics throughout the world.

The University housing program provides on-campus housing to Manoa students in a variety of living arrangements that include apartments and traditional coed facilities, single and double occupancy rooms, suites and apartment units. The University housing program strives to create an atmosphere conducive to the development of responsible citizens in a democratic community. Specific rules and regulations intended to protect the rights of individuals have been developed by the University administration, residential staff and student leaders. Each resident is responsible to know and observe these rules and regulations. Residents who cannot accept these basic rules for community living or cannot extend consideration for the rights of other residents should evaluate their needs carefully before applying for on-campus housing. Contract releases are not granted for reasons of dissatisfaction with a group living environment. The 2008-2009 Academic Year contract provides housing for the Fall and Spring semesters with prices for traditional doubles starting at $3,497 and apartments units starting at $4,631. Meal plans are handled by a private provider, Sodexho, with prices starting around $1,151 per semester, or $2,302 for the academic year. All applicants should review the assignment terms and priorities for the 2008-2009 academic year.
