The mission of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, State University of New York at Buffalo is to:Perform world-class research in selected areas of computing. The mission of the Department is to perform and be internationally known for research in the areas of: algorithms and theory; computer networks and distributed systems; computer security and information assurance; computer vision and information visualization; databases and data mining; high-performance computing and computational science; knowledge representation and computational linguistics; multiagent systems and electronic commerce; multimedia databases and information retrieval; pattern recognition and machine learning; programming languages and software systems; and VLSI and computer architecture.

The University at Buffalo offers students a variety of housing options. Students have the option to live either on-campus of off-campus. The residence halls are generally reserved for first and second year undergraduate students. The on-campus apartment complexes are reserved for our third and fourth year students. They also have designated on-campus apartment complexes for graduate students. The residence halls are located on both the north and south campus. There are five residence hall facilities on the South Campus: Clement and Goodyear Halls, which are two high-rise halls connected by a service area; Pritchard, MacDonald, and Schoellkopf Halls, which are four story residences. International students choosing to live on the South Campus should choose Clement Hall or MacDonald Hall as their first choice since those are the only two South Campus Residence Halls that remains open during term breaks. The North Campus has two housing clusters: the Governors Residence Halls and the the Joseph Ellicott Complex. International students choosing to live on the North Campus should choose Red Jacket Quadrange or Clinton Hall as their first choice since they are the only North Campus Residence Halls that remain open during term breaks. The rooms are furnished with a bed, mattress, desk and chair, nightstand, dresser, and a lamp for each occupant. Rooms are equipped with Ethernet data connections for personal computers. Each room is with a telephone jack and is wired for cable television reception. Costs for rooms are as follows: Single Room: $6648 per year, Double Room: $5698 per year, Triple room: $5416 per year, Four person room: $4890 per year.
