This program is designed to teach students skills in written and spoken Russian, instruct them in Russian literature (or linguistics, as an option), and acquaint them with the main characteristics of Russian history and culture. The program is similar to the major in Russian Civilization, but it has a more humanistic emphasis. It is intended for students preparing for graduate work, those planning a career in government or industry in which knowledge of Russian is useful, and those whose primary aim is to read the masterpieces of Russian literature in the original or to study Russian linguistics as part of a humanistic education. Within the program there are two options: one with emphasis on literature and the other with emphasis on Russian linguistics.

SOSC 24000-24100 (recommended), 3 RUSS 20100-20200-20300 or RUSS 20400-20500-20600 (second-year Russian), 3 RUSS 20702-20802-20902 (third-year Russian), 3 RUSS 21002-21102-21202 (fourth-year Russian), 4 courses from one of the options below: either the Russian Literature option (two courses chosen from RUSS 255xx, 256xx, or 257xx; plus two additional Russian literature courses); or the Russian Linguistics option (SLAV 20100; plus RUSS 23000 or 23100; plus two approved courses in Russian literature, Slavic linguistics, or general linguistics), B.A. paper.

Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A minimum TOEFL score of 600 or higher on the old Paper Based TOEFL, 250 or higher on Computer Based TOEFL, or 104 or higher on the new Internet Based TOEFL is required. Minimum required scores in the IELTS are an overall score of 7, with sub scores of 7 each.

Well-integrated with other units of this world-class university, this department provides a thorough preparation in its core disciplines while encouraging exploration in other fields. The University of Chicago is located in a unique residential neighborhood within the city of Chicago Hyde Park. As a graduate student at the University, students may take advantage of the University's large pool of affordable and conveniently located housing in the Hyde Park community. Nearly all of the University's students and over 60 percent of its faculty and staff live in the campus neighborhood. This makes for a very special sense of community and a lively intellectual atmosphere that complements the academic experience. The University owns and operates more than 1,300 apartments throughout the neighborhood for lease to graduate students. A spirit of cooperation, both among the tenants and between landlord and tenant, is the norm in the apartments. The most modern facility available to University of Chicago graduate students, the New Graduate Residence Hall (NGRH) is home to more than 120 students. NGRH is open only during the academic year it is closed during the summer quarter. The three story building is illuminated inside through large windows set in from an overhanging roof. Its spacious lobby has the feel of a luxury apartment building Rooms most of them singles with private bathrooms are well removed from these common areas, and include newer maple wood furniture, carpet, University telephone and internet connections and optional cable television. Students may prepare their own meals in a large common kitchen, which has many stoves and refrigerators and individual dry storage bins. Residents may purchase an optional meal plan to eat at specified campus dining halls . There are conference rooms for group study, a well-equipped exercise room, two music rooms with pianos and wireless access in most common areas. The NGRH is two blocks from the Law School and close to rail and bus lines. Public festivals and concerts are also scheduled on the Midway. The cost of attendance for Room and Board is $11,697.
