Arizona State University is one of the premier metropolitan research universities in the nation, an institution of international scope, committed to excellence in teaching, research, and public service. The university was established in Tempe in 1885 by an act of the Thirteenth Territorial Legislature, ASU was initially formed as a teachers college. The name of the institution changed three times during its first fifteen years, becoming the Normal School of Arizona in 1901. Subsequent changes were associated with expansions of the curriculum and degrees offered. In rapid succession Tempe State Teachers College became Arizona State Teachers College, and in 1945, Arizona State College. By 1958 the college performed all the functions of a university, and received authorization by an act of the governor to become Arizona State University. The university is a creating a new model for American higher education, an unprecedented combination of academic excellence, entrepreneurial energy and broad access. This New American University is a single, unified institution comprising four differentiated campuses positively impacting the economic, social, cultural and environmental health of the communities it serves. Its research is inspired by real world application, blurring the boundaries that traditionally separate academic disciplines.

Students can choose their on-campus housing at Taylor Place premier residential community which is located in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The Taylor Place has two towers, each 12 stories above the common, first floor, will house approximately 750 students in 2008 with an additional 500 students joining in 2009. Each floor has a laundry facility, small meeting room, vending area, lounge and screened porch areas. The 4,000-square-foot shade garden is overlooked by a private roof terrace for students. This public garden includes seating and a water feature and is linked with Taylor Street's landscape and pedestrian plan. The amenities include: fully furnished two-person room; bathroom shared with one roommate; controlled access and common-area cameras; 24-hour staff presence; in-hall fitness center; in-hall dining program provided by Sun Devil Dining; in-hall mail service; and newly renovated YMCA recreational facility two blocks away.
