This program is designed to give students an overview of the history and variety of literature written in English; to use the critical study of language and literature to help students think carefully and express themselves well; and to introduce students to the debates about literature and culture that shape, intellectual lives and national and global conversations. The hope is that graduates will enter the world with the sophistication, critical acumen, and sympathy born of wide reading and with the skills needed to carry their convictions into action, no matter what line of work they pursue.

The modules include ENGL301: Critical Methods in the Study of Literature 3; Literary and Cultural History 3; Literary, Linguistic, or Rhetorical Analysis 3; Literature of African-Americans, Peoples of Color, Women, and/or Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals 3; Writing before 1800 (two courses) 6; Modern British, Anglophone, and/or Postcolonial Writing (after 1800) (one course) 3; American, African American, and/or U.S. Ethnic Writing (one course) 3.

Applicants are considered for admission based on the following criteria: academic performance in high school, SAT I and/or ACT scores, class rank (if available), essay, extracurricular activities, school counselor and teacher recommendations, and responses to short answer questions. Maryland residency, special talents and/or abilities, personal experiences and background and Maryland alumni/ae affiliation may also be taken into consideration. As prescribed by the Board of Regents, the university expects all applicants, at a minimum, to have completed by graduation the following course work: four years of English, three years of mathematics, including algebra I or applied math I and II, formal logic or geometry, three years of history or social science, three years of science in at least two different areas, with at least two lab experiences, and two years of a foreign language. A fourth year of mathematics is strongly recommended.

The Department of English is the largest department in the College of Arts and Humanities and made up of a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students. The department enrolls approximately 750 undergraduates in newly designed major and over 200 students in its nationally ranked graduate programs. The Freshman and Professional Writing Programs educate students across the University in fundamental and advanced practices of argument and analysis. The Writing Center supports the enhancement of student writing across campus through its tutorial service and workshops.

The University of Maryland provides good residential facilities to its students. There are about 8,245 beds in 36 residence halls and a 625-bed Leonardtown apartment community in the University. Most students live in double rooms and have one roommate. About 12 per cent of all beds are in triple or quad rooms, where students have two or three roommates. Single rooms (no roommate) are assigned solely to returning residence hall students through a seniority system. There is no access to single rooms for new-to-housing students, including for reasons of a medical condition or disability. New-to-housing students may request assignments in traditional "dormitory-style" residence halls (most without air conditioning) or in furnished, carpeted and air-conditioned apartments or suites. Housing demand from graduate students usually exceeds the supply of available beds, so students are requested to ask for housing early, preferably immediately upon receiving formal notice of their admission. All requests are initially placed on a waiting list. If space becomes available, graduate students are moved off the waiting list and assigned a room and roommate. Priority for residence hall housing is given to full-time undergraduate students. The Department of Dining Services offers plans to suit every appetite and every schedule. Classic plans accommodate those living in on-campus residence halls, optional plans cater to students living in nearby apartments and houses, and add-on plans meet the needs of students with large appetites or a desire for even greater convenience and flexibility. Only students who live in traditional and suite-style residence halls where no cooking is permitted are required to have dining plans.
