Montclair State University considers a number of factors during the admission process. These factors include the rigor of high school curriculum, the overall grade point average (GPA), standardized test scores, and additional factors that contribute to successful degree attainment. These standards are subject to change depending on the demand for programs and the number of students that can be accommodated. In preparation for the academic rigor of Montclair State University, students should have followed a challenging high school curriculum. As a Freshman Applicant, students are required to have completed the following high school courses with satisfactory grades: 4 units of English, 3 units of math (in the Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II sequence), 2 units of the same foreign language, 2 units of lab sciences, 2 units of social sciences 3 units of academic electives (which may include additional units of math, languages, sciences or social sciences.) Strong candidates for admission generally meet the following criteria: A GPA of 3.0 or greater in the required curriculum, A combined SAT score of 1425 (Math, Critical Reading, and Writing) or ACT composite score of 20.

The Department of Art and Design occupies three buildings on campus, housing fully equipped facilities for all studio and non-studio areas. The majority of facilities and the department office are located in Calcia Hall; Graphic and Industrial Design programs occupy Finley Hall North; and the MFA program is in Finley Hall South. Students also have access to arts facilities outside the department including the Dumont Television Center and the university's George Segal Gallery. Studio Facilities Animation Studio, Betty Schlossman Image Library, Calcia Auditorium, Ceramics, Drawing, Fashion Studies, Fiber/Textiles, Film Making, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, MFA Facilities, Metal and Jewelry, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture. The beautiful George Segal Gallery is a wonderful addition to MSU's arts facilities and a resource for students in the Department of Art and Design. Architecturally, the Gallery is state of the art and conforms to museum-approved standards. It comprises 3,130 square feet of exhibition space that is climate controlled with lights and nuclear window shades that block natural light. The Gallery also includes a dry fire suppression system, wood floors, track lighting, movable transparent exhibition walls, seminar and art prep rooms and more. The gallery was born out of the generosity of the George and Helen Segal Foundation and Montclair State's commitment to the arts. The animation program provides a PC lab and a Mac lab, each equipped with 15 work stations and current animation software that is used in today's industry including Light wave, Cinema 4D, Mirage and Maya. The Betty Schlossman Image Library contains more than 125,000 slides, books and periodicals available for student research. The collection complements holdings in the university's Sprague Library on campus. The Image Library is overseen by a full-time image librarian.
