The undergraduate major in geography includes the study of various aspects of, cultural, human, physical, and regional geography as well as cartography, quantitative methods, and field work. Backgrounds in the natural and social sciences, history, and statistical methods will be found useful to the geography major, the emphasis depending on the student's particular interests. Geography courses are designed to provide an understanding of the interrelations of components of the natural environment; the ecological problems that result from human activities; the patterns of resources, human use and occupancy of the earth; and geographic approaches to contemporary social issues such as problems of development, population growth and distribution, resource management, urbanization, and spatial organization of societies.

At least one upper division course in each of the following sub-disciplines: Human geography, Physical geography, Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific regional geography, Cartography, remote sensing and geographic information systems, etc.

Applicants to UH Manoa are expected to have completed certain requirements in high school. Professional and certain other programs may have specific GPA and prerequisite course work requirements. Students who do not have any university/college coursework will be required to submit either the SAT or ACT. Both are not required. Minimum TOEFL Scores required are: Computer Score 173, Internet Score 61, Paper Score 500. 2.50 is the minimum GPA requirement for international applicants transferring from an U.S. institution. Professional and certain other programs may require higher GPAs and additional prerequisite course work.

The Department of Geography is an integrative discipline that strives to link three overlapping domains - the environmental, the human and the technological, to understand humans as inhabitants and transformers of the earth. It has roots in both the physical and the social sciences. An overriding spatial perspective is reflected in such integrative concepts as place, region, landscapes and seascapes, human and physical systems.

The University housing program provides on-campus housing to Manoa students in a variety of living arrangements that include apartments and traditional coed facilities, single and double occupancy rooms, suites and apartment units. The University housing program strives to create an atmosphere conducive to the development of responsible citizens in a democratic community. Specific rules and regulations intended to protect the rights of individuals have been developed by the University administration, residential staff and student leaders. Each resident is responsible to know and observe these rules and regulations. Residents who cannot accept these basic rules for community living or cannot extend consideration for the rights of other residents should evaluate their needs carefully before applying for on-campus housing. Contract releases are not granted for reasons of dissatisfaction with a group living environment. The 2008-2009 Academic Year contract provides housing for the Fall and Spring semesters with prices for traditional doubles starting at $3,497 and apartments units starting at $4,631. Meal plans are handled by a private provider, Sodexho, with prices starting around $1,151 per semester, or $2,302 for the academic year. All applicants should review the assignment terms and priorities for the 2008-2009 academic year.
