Architectural education at the University of Hawai‘i began in 1946 with a Pre-Architecture Program offered in the College of Applied Science. In 1965, Pre-Architecture was changed to a four-year program B.A. in Pre-Architecture. In 1967, the Department of Art became the Department of Art and Architecture, and the B.A. was replaced by a B.F.A. in Environmental Design. In 1969, a new Department of Architecture was formed within the Colleges of Arts and Sciences. A Master of Architecture Program was approved in 1971 with emphasis in Design Technology, Urban/Regional Design, and Tropical Development Studies; the program received initial accreditation by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) in 1972.

The University housing program provides on-campus housing to Manoa students in a variety of living arrangements that include apartments and traditional coed facilities, single and double occupancy rooms, suites and apartment units. The University housing program strives to create an atmosphere conducive to the development of responsible citizens in a democratic community. Specific rules and regulations intended to protect the rights of individuals have been developed by the University administration, residential staff and student leaders. Each resident is responsible to know and observe these rules and regulations. Residents who cannot accept these basic rules for community living or cannot extend consideration for the rights of other residents should evaluate their needs carefully before applying for on-campus housing. Contract releases are not granted for reasons of dissatisfaction with a group living environment. The 2008-2009 Academic Year contract provides housing for the Fall and Spring semesters with prices for traditional doubles starting at $3,497 and apartments units starting at $4,631. Meal plans are handled by a private provider, Sodexho, with prices starting around $1,151 per semester, or $2,302 for the academic year. All applicants should review the assignment terms and priorities for the 2008-2009 academic year.
