This program allows the highest achieving undergraduate English majors early admission into the English MA Program. Once admitted, students take four graduate English courses in place of undergraduate courses that are similar in content. The combined degree has two tracks: one leads to English Teacher Certification, while the other leads only to the MA. This program is designed for students to finish both the undergraduate and graduate degree in five years, although there is no requirement to finish in this period.

Students must hold a bachelors degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Applicants whose first or native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English prior to matriculation. To be considered for admission, an applicant must present an acceptable score on the TOEFL or IELTS test. They should have obtained a minimum score of 550 on paper based test, 213 on computer based test and, 80 on internet based test. An overall score of at least 6.5 with no sub-section below 6 is required on the International English Language Testing System exam (IELTS).

Stony Brook University's English Department, in the College of Arts and Sciences, is known for its excellence in scholarship and teaching. Within the last ten years faculty members have published more than 47 books of criticism, fiction, and poetry. Among the many awards individuals have won are the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics' Circle Award, Guggenheim fellowships, Fulbright research and teaching fellowships, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships and grants. Five faculty members have received both the Chancellor's and the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and two have been appointed SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professors.On campus, there are several other programs and institutes closely affiliated with the English Department. The Annual International Stony Brook Short Fiction Prize, for instance, is sponsored and managed by members of the faculty. The Humanities Institute provides a place for interdisciplinary and theoretical work, offers an annual graduate student seminar, and sponsors on ongoing lecture series and an annual conference of international speakers. Several faculty are affiliated with certificate programs, such as the minor in Medieval Studies, Women's Studies, and the Cultural Studies Certificate. The department maintains close ties with the Program in Writing and Rhetoric and sponsors an annual conference for graduate students.

Stony Brook University has largest residential campus, offering 26 residence halls. The residence halls called quads are conveniently located on different parts of the campus. There are two types of residence halls to choose from: Corridor Style : In corridor style buildings, a community of approximately 30 residents live in double or single bedrooms along a corridor, sharing a common bath and shower area, lounge area, and a kitchen. Many residents prefer to live in these buildings due to the social nature of the halls. Suite Style: In suite style buildings, four or six residents of the same gender share two or three bedrooms, a private bathroom, and living or dining area. There are two types of Suites: cooking, and non-cooking. The common rooms in cooking suits are furnished with dining tables, chairs, and cooking facilities; common rooms in non-cooking suits are furnished with couches and end tables. As a general rule, incoming students are placed in residence halls based on their college of interest. All rooms come furnished with an extra long twin bed, desk, chair, dresser, and bookcase for each resident, have high-speed access to the Internet, and are equipped with state of the art phone systems featuring digital phone mail, conference calling, and call forwarding. A cable access connection in each room provides Cablevision’s premium service. On single gender floors, residents share common bath and shower areas. Each quad has its own fitness center featuring Nautilus and Cybex equipment. Some fitness centers offer aerobics classes, and all are staffed by trained students who can provide assistance.
