The College of Liberal Arts was created in 1929 after school superintendents, who were impressed with the teachers from Kent State, insisted that such a quality undergraduate education be available to their students who were interested in pursuing other careers. This resulted in a grassroots movement of service clubs, chambers of commerce, American Legion posts, and many civic organizations to bring a liberal arts college to northeast Ohio. The College was established with two objectives: to provide the opportunity for contact with a variety of fields of human knowledge necessary for general culture and to provide the opportunity for special study in the field of the student’s individual interest. In 1956 the College of Liberal Arts was renamed the College of Arts and Sciences and grouped into the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Currently, the College of Arts and Sciences houses 19 departments.

The Department of Residence Services offers on campus housing for students. The convenience of living on campus provides students easy access to numerous campus resources such as faculty and academic advisors, the library, computer labs, residence hall cafeterias and other campus eateries, the health center, recreational facilities, and student organizations. The RISC Office maintains six computer clusters at Kent State University. The computer labs are located in Tri-Towers, Twin Towers, McSweeney, Korb, Verder, and Allerton. The labs in Korb and Allerton are available only to the residents of that hall. All labs are open 24-hours and are monitored by cameras. University Food Services provides students dining options in five cafeterias located in Stewart Hall, Tri-Towers Rotunda, Prentice Hall, Eastway Center and the Kent Student Center. The department provides every student living in the residence halls and Allerton Student Family Apartments the opportunity to use the residential network. ResNet provides in-room access to the internet and Kent State's computing resources. It provides opportunity to use the ResTV Cable Television System; transportation to students, including campus bus routes, and services for students with disabilities- Student Disability Transportation Services (SDTS); and the residence hall rooms contain uniquely sized, extra-long mattresses (36”x80”). A Huskie Loft is an elevated twin bed designed to make the college room more usable by expanding its floor space. Microfridge features a microwave oven and compact refrigerator/freezer combination that offers convenience and cost effectiveness.
