This emphasis familiarizes students with major ethical theories and their applications in a number of fields and work situations. Beginning courses provide a framework for ethical thinking and decision making from a variety of theoretical orientations, along with introductory applications to social problems. Advanced courses apply this thinking to complex issues generated within specific fields such as medicine, technology, and the environment. Principles that emerge from the study of applied ethics can complement a variety of majors and minors, as well as enhance students’ moral education and theoretical literacy for handling ethical problems that may emerge in a variety of careers.

Students must have completed high school diploma or a GED. In addition, the individual has attempted fewer than 26 semester (39 quarter) credits at a post-secondary institution. If a student is graduating from high school and has less than 26 semester credits, she/he will be considered a new entering freshman, allowing the student to be considered for merit scholarships and participation in Academic Orientation. High school students should have completion of a minimum of the following courses: 4 years English, 3 years math (including a minimum of algebra, intermediate algebra, and geometry), 3 years science (1 year each of biological and physical science), 3 years social studies (including U.S. history) and 2 years single second language. Scores from either the ACT or SAT exams including writing is required. International students must have minimum TOEFL scores of 550 Written, 213 Computer, 80 Internet (iBT) or an IELTS score of 6.5.

The UMD Department of Philosophy offers a major and minor in philosophy, including a track with an applied ethics emphasis. It also offers many Liberal Education courses. Philosophy classes cover topics that include ethics, law, logic, cognitive science, religion, scientific methodology, existential literature and many others. Studying Philosophy prepares students to become involved citizens and to work at a variety of careers in a conceptually and morally complex world. The Department has six full-time faculty members and several associated faculty. The Philosophy Department sponsors regular colloquia and informal philosophy discussion groups, and is also home to the Center for Ethics and Public Policy. The Socratic Society is an organization run by UMD students who are passionate about philosophy.

The Office of Residence Life believes that campus living is integral to a student's educational experience. The purpose of residence life is to promote community development and personal growth. In choosing to live on campus, a student-resident commits to participate as a positive citizen in an educational community; a community characterized by respect, responsibility and opportunity. A variety of furnished housing is available at UMD for students who wish to live in University residence halls and apartments. The University offers housing to 1,564 students in traditional residence halls and 1,455 students in apartment-style units. Residence Hall rooms are furnished with beds and mattresses, draperies, desks, chairs, drawer space, study lamps, wastebaskets, compact refrigerator, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Almost all rooms in the residence halls are designed for two students. Students living in the residence halls must provide their own bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow cases, blankets and bedspreads). Apartment units are furnished with refrigerator, stove, couch and chair, end table, dining table and chairs, beds and mattresses, desks, chairs, dressers, desk lamps, shower curtain, draperies, local telephone service and telephone, basic cable TV service, and Ethernet computer connection for each resident. Students living in the University apartment s must provide their own cooking and eating utensils, wastebaskets, and bed linens (pillows, sheets, pillow case, blanket and bedspread). Each apartment is designed for four students.
